The New Hanover, N.C., County Board of Commissioners is considering several self-storage design requirements that would apply where new projects are zoned by right. The move mirrors aesthetic demands officials typically place on developments proposed for areas in which storage is a conditional use. If adopted, the restrictions would apply to building exteriors, colors and materials, according to the source.
Restrictions under consideration include:
- Transparent windows or doors would comprise at least 10 percent of a building façade that faces a public or private street, shared parking area, pedestrian walkway or designated open space.
- Building exteriors visible from the street or abutting properties would feature color tones found predominately in the natural environment.
- Metal would be prohibited as a primary material on exterior walls and perimeters visible from an arterial street or residential district or development.
- Outdoor storage would be limited to licensed and operational boats and RVs.
The new design standards would affect at-right self-storage projects along Carolina Beach Road, Castle Hayne Road, College Road and Market Street. If approved, they’d be added to the county’s Unified Development Ordinance document passed in February. The board was expected to address the design provisions on Tuesday.
